Couldn't agree more.

I am regularly asked whether I 'miss' being an industry analyst. And my answer is always the same - I had a blast, but the business model of the analyst firms is dead. For all the reasons you list above.

Nice work.

Brooks,
What I am saying is that less and less people are going to buy their reports because the content is static - when people can find up to date real user experience on the products that these analysts cover for free on the web.

The same problem is happening in the newspaper industry - by the time the newspaper is published and arrives home the next day, the news is old. My prediction is that the fate of these analyst reports is going to be the same. The analysts are holding vendors hostage these days and milking them for more cash by doing projects for them - conflict of interest - no?

Having said this, I have full appreciation of what Forrester is doing via Josh Bernoff, Charlene Li and Jeremiah Owyang - this is the way to go - the book by Bernoff and Li called Groundswell is just outstanding when it comes to socila media. Their blog is outstanding as well. If other analysts follow suit and do something along these lines, they stand a chance, otherwise they can start their eulogies now.

I like your points. It is an interesting discussion, but I don't use their reports as anything more than helping paint a picture. Providing a little color here and there to support or challenge requirements, design or implementation of the product. My use with these guys is primarily around the access to information that I am not able to collect easily through other sources.

There does seem to be a little conflict of interest in some reports, but I don't focus on those. Oh, and the static reports are part of the business model right? They have no incentive to keep them updated unless there is money involved and wouldn't it make sense to get something commissioned?
